Caroline Gavazzi is a French/Italian photographer whose imprint is undoubtedly international, starting from her education. She moved to Paris when still very young, and studied at the Spéos Photography School in Paris in 1991 and at the Sorbonne, where in 1994 she obtained a degree in Geography and Urban Planning. The following year she relocated to London, where she obtained a master’s degree in Professional Photography Practice at the LCC, which enabled her to start working in 1996 as Picture Coordinator in the arts department at Vogue UK; in 1997 as Picture Editor for the Harvey Nichols magazine; and in 1998 as photographer of interiors, portraits and still life for prestigious magazines such as Vogue UK, House & Garden, Tatler, Condé Nast Traveller, Elle. The shift from commercial photography to creative photography was the inevitable outcome of the wealth of interests that encouraged her to seek new forms of expression.
Currently, Caroline Gavazzi focuses on a genre of photography she classifies as Plastic, inspired by her culture and sensitivity. Overcoming a realistic vision, she tackles different subjects with a markedly symbolic take, often concentrating on the act of revealing what is concealed beneath appearance. To obtain this result, she carefully researches her projects, seeking for each, original and non-repetitive solutions. She designs photographic installations that lever on three-dimensional effects and on the visual displacement created by layers of material, thus involving spectators, inducing them to approach and critically share the questions that her research produces on being and on her problematic relationship with reality. Caroline Gavazzi currently works and lives between Milan and London.

Caroline Gavazzi e’ una fotografa franco-italiana la cui impronta è decisamente internazionale già a partire dalla sua formazione. A Parigi, dove si trasferisce dall’Italia giovanissima, studia alla scuola di Fotografia Spéos a Parigi nel 1991 e alla Sorbona dove, nel 1994, si laurea in Geografia e Urbanistica. L’anno dopo è a Londra dove ottiene un Master in “Professional Photography Practice” al LCC, cosa che le permette di iniziare a lavorare nel 1996 in qualità di Picture Coordinator nel dipartimento artistico di Vogue UK, nel 1997 come Picture Editor nella rivista di Harvey Nichols e, dal 1998, come fotografa di interni, ritratti e still life per prestigiose riviste come Vogue UK, House & Garden, Tatler, Conde’ Nast Traveller, Elle. Il passaggio dalla fotografia commerciale a quella creativa è l’inevitabile esito del ventaglio di interessi che la spinge a cercare nuove strade espressive.
Attualmente Caroline Gavazzi si dedica, infatti, a un genere di fotografia che definisce plastica perché inspirata dalla sua cultura e sensibilità. Superando dialetticamente la visione realistica, affronta diversi soggetti con un taglio marcatamente simbolico spesso concentrandosi sull’atto di rivelare ciò che si nasconde dietro le apparenze. Per ottenere questo risultato studia con particolare cura i suoi progetti cercando per ognuno soluzioni originali e mai ripetitive ricorrendo a installazioni fotografiche che, giocando sugli effetti della tridimensionalità e sullo spiazzamento visivo creato dagli strati di materia, coinvolgono lo spettatore inducendolo ad affrontare e condividere criticamente le domande che le ricerche della fotografa pongono sull’essere e sul suo rapporto problematico con la realtà. Attualmente Caroline Gavazzi vive e lavora fra Milano e Londra.
